Oculus Rift CV1, also known simply as Oculus Rift, is a virtual reality headset developed by Oculus VR, a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc. It was announced in January 2016,[7] and released in March the same year. The device constituted the first commercial release in the Oculus Rift lineup.
Production of the CV1 concluded in March 2019, being succeeded by the Oculus Rift Southward. Meta have stated that they will go along to provide software support to the CV1 "for the foreseeable future".[viii]
History [edit]
After the DK1 and DK2 prototypes, Oculus VR finally announced on May 6, 2015, that the consumer version of the Rift would ship in the beginning quarter of 2022 with pre-orders starting on Jan 6, 2016, at viii am PST.[9]
On January 5, 2016, the day before pre-orders went live, in an update posted to the original Kickstarter folio, it was announced that all Kickstarter backers who pledged for a Rift evolution kit would get a free KickStarter Edition Oculus Rift.[ten]
On January 6, 2016, pre-orders started, at $599.99.[11] At the same time, the shipment engagement was appear for March 28, 2016.[12] On January 16, 2016, shipping dates for new orders of the Rift were delayed until July 2022 due to the number of pre-orders on day 1.
On March 25, 2016, the first batch of Oculus Rift virtual reality headsets began shipping to consumers.[xiii] On Apr 12, 2016, customers were notified that their shipments were pushed back due to early on component shortage. The dates varied betwixt 3 and 8 weeks of delay in regards to previous estimates.
In March 2019, shortly before the Rift S was announced, the original Rift started disappearing from physical third-party stores, making it available only via the official Facebook listing.[xiv] Then, during the announcement, it was said that the Rift S would replace the original Rift. Presently afterwards, most sellers stopped replenishing their Rift stock.[15]
In March 2019, Oculus VR stated that they planned to support the original Rift with software updates for "the foreseeable time to come."[eight]
Hardware [edit]

The CV1 is an improved version of the Crescent Bay Paradigm, featuring per-center displays running at 90 Hz with a higher combined resolution than DK2, 360-degree positional tracking, integrated audio, a vastly increased positional tracking volume, and a heavy focus on consumer ergonomics and aesthetics.[16]
Displays [edit]
The device features two Pentile OLED displays, 1080×1200 resolution per eye, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a 110° field of view.[17] [18] [nineteen] The separation of the lenses is adjustable by a slider on the bottom of the device, in order to accommodate a wide range of interpupillary distances. The fresnel lenses are non interchangeable; all the same, there are multiple facial interfaces then that the device can be positioned at different distances from the user's eyes. This also allows for users wearing glasses to utilise the Rift, as well as users with widely varying facial shapes.
Audio [edit]
The Rift CV1 features integrated headphones that provide real-time 3D audio effects. This was adult from applied science licensed from RealSpace 3D Audio, by Visisonics.[xx] The headphones are user-replaceable, with Oculus and other manufactures such as JBL providing aftermarket audio accessories. The CV1 was struck by a design flaw by which the headphones lost sound on either side, after a cable running through the headband at the back of the headset was severed from regular use. In light of this event, Palmer Luckey announced a entrada by which he was meant to ship a costless custom made solution for this flaw to affected users, but the announcement never materialized.[21]
Constellation [edit]
Oculus Rift Constellation sensor
Constellation is the headset'southward rotational and positional tracking organisation, used to rails the position of the user'south head likewise every bit other VR devices,[22] with low latency, and sub-millimeter accurateness.[23] The organization consists of external infrared tracking sensors that optically track specially designed VR devices. This provides the Rift with full 6 degree of liberty rotational and positional tracking.
The Rift, or any other device being tracked by the organisation, is fitted with a serial of precisely positioned infrared LEDs nether or to a higher place the surface, prepare to blink in a specific pattern. By knowing the configuration of the LEDs on the objects and their blueprint, the system can determine the precise position of the device with sub-millimeter accurateness and nearly-zip latency.[22] The system and then includes one or more USB stationary infrared sensors that originally come with a stand in a desk-bound lamp grade factor, but standard screw holes allow for the stand to exist removed and the sensor to be mounted anywhere the user sees fit. The sensors normally sit on the user'south desk-bound, creating a 3D space that allows the user to use the device while sitting, standing, walking, or even jumping effectually the room.[23]
In its initial presentation, before the Touch controllers were released, the arrangement was only used to rails the head-mounted brandish, and a single sensor was included with the device, which was sufficient there beingness no chance of the user'due south hands blocking the headset from it. When the Touch controllers were released, 2-sensor setups became the baseline, in gild to guarantee proper tracking of the headset and controllers.[24] For "room scale" virtual reality, three or more sensors are required. When the controllers were sold separately, a 2nd sensor was included. Later, the standard Rift bundle was updated to include the controllers and boosted sensor. Boosted sensors, placed backside the user, allow for 360º rotation without the sensors being occluded by the user them self. Three- and four-sensor configurations become the standard for this scenario.
Controllers [edit]
The Oculus Remote, included with the first shipments of the Rift CV1, up until the introduction of the Oculus Touch controllers.
As a event of a partnership with Microsoft, early on Oculus Rift units were arranged with an Xbox One controller,[25] beingness what the majority of virtual reality games used at that point, when motion controllers weren't available withal.[26]
Besides included with the packet was the Oculus Remote, a wireless remote that provided basic navigation functionality. It included four directional inputs, a touch-sensitive disc, Enter and Dorsum buttons, volume up/down, and an Oculus button.[27]
In Dec 2016,[28] the Oculus Touch motion controllers were released. Initially released as a standalone accompaniment for the Rift, pre-orders for Oculus Bear on began on Oct ten, 2016, with priority granted until October 27 to those who had originally pre-ordered Oculus Rift,[29] and they were finally released on Dec 6, 2016.[xxx]
In August 2017, the standard Rift bundle was modified, dropping the Oculus Remote and Xbox One controller in favor of the Oculus Affect, and adding a second tracking sensor.
Rift for Business [edit]
During Oculus Connect in June 2017, Oculus VR appear and released their Oculus Rift for Business bundle for US$900, which included the Rift CV1 HMD, Oculus Bear on controllers, iii Constellation sensors, an Oculus remote, and three Rift Fits (the name given to the piece that cushions the device onto the user'due south face). The bundle also includes an expanded warranty, preferential client service, and commercial use license.[31] [32]
